The Beaver Wars (1628-1700)

This conflict is also known as the Iroquois Wars depending on the historiography.

This "war" was a series of conflicts involving the Iroquois Confederacy, numerous other Iroquoian groups and the French Colonial Forces. As the First Nations economy became more and more dependent on the colonials, the Iroquois Confederacy began to look for ways to exert their believed dominance. After receiving arms from the Dutch traders in modern-day New York State, the Iroquois Confederacy began to exert their military strength. This led to clashes between the Confederacy  and the Mohicans and Mohawks. As these clashes continued, the Mohawks were forced to attack the Algonquin and the Oneida's. As the clashes came closer to the French settlements, the colonials became involved. By 1642, the French had begun to halt the more serious raids, and further fortified their settlements as far as Montreal. The Iroquois Confederacy attacks slowed down for a while, and largely attacked remote outposts and villages. The next large attacks would only come in the winter of 1649-50 along the Nipissing. Hostilities would continue to grow until the Iroquois Confederacy entered into a peace agreement with the French Colonials in 1653; which would only last until 1657 after an attack near lake Erie. Hostilities would continue to grow, and were made worse during 1659-60; and despite attempts at Peace, the Iroquois did not seem to want peace. That was until 1667; when the Carignan-Salières Regiment burned a Mohawk village and food supplies. The Confederacy continued to absorb surrounding groups in the Ohio Valley. Other than a small outbreak of hostilities again in 1689 - the French and Iroquois Confederacy entered into an ultimate Peace in 1701; where the Iroquois agreed to stay neutral in any future way between France and Britain. (The Canadian Encyclopedia)
